Membership Application The Charles County Chamber of Commerce is a private, not-for-profit organization of more than 750 member businesses and business representatives. It was founded in 1956, and is the largest private business organization in Southern Maryland. The chamber is governed by a 23-member board of directors and an eight-member executive committee. Its programs and services are carried out by a paid staff of five and 15 committees comprised of more than 100 energetic volunteers. The chamber's work is concentrated in three areas: * Exclusive membership services. These services include networking opportunities, such as the monthly mixers that give members an opportunity to make new contacts, and annual events, such as the Charles County Business to Business Expo, which allow members to showcase their products and services to other businesses. * Government representation. The chamber advocates on behalf of its members before public bodies and encourages pro-business action at all levels of government. It is able to accomplish collectively what no one member could do alone. * Promoting Charles County. The chamber provides information on the county to residents and newcomers through publications such as its annual Membership Directory and Community Guide. It also works with other organizations, such as the local Economic Development Commission, to promote the county. The chamber is one of the most successful business groups in the Washington, D.C., area. The key to its strength lies in the diversity of its membership: Businesses of all sizes from virtually every profession are represented within the organization.
